Chinese Media Reports U.S.- South Korea Joint Military Exercises Would Aggravate Situation on Korean Peninsula

With regard to the joint military exercises being doggedly conducted by the United States and south Korea in defiance of the objections from the DPRK, Chinese Xinhua News Agency and Guang Ming Network reported on August 16 that the exercises would further aggravate the situation on the Korean peninsula, pointing out that the purpose of the joint military exercises is to cement the U.S.-south Korea alliance and to have the initiative at the talks on nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula.

The following are the main contents of the reports.

The U.S. and south Korea started a “combined command exercise” of the second half of the year from August 16, preceded by a preliminary exercise called “exercise of the staff for crisis control” from August 10 to 13.

The pursuit of joint military exercises by the U.S. and south Korea, at a time when there is an emerging opportunity of shift in the situation of the Korean peninsula owing to the full restoration of inter-Korean communication channel, is arousing strong denunciation of the DPRK and also huge differences within south Korea. And this will likely bring a negative impact on the future developments on the Korean peninsula.

Overall, the American goal of doggedly carrying out these military exercises together with south Korea is to further deepen the U.S.-south Korea relations and cement the “U.S-led, south Korea-subordinated” military alliance, and to have the initiative in the U.S-DPRK-south Korea tripartite diplomacy and at the talks on nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula in the future by increasing pressure on the DPRK.

In recent years, the U.S. and south Korea have continued to escalate military threats against the DPRK, giving a continuous rise to the increased tension on the Korean peninsula and prompting strong responses from their neighbors.

It goes without saying that the unilateral action taken by the U.S. and south Korea, driven by their own interests, is further aggravating the situation in the Northeast Asian region.
